ARREST WARRANT ISSUED FOR LAFAYETTE RESIDENT FOR EXPLOITING AN ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBER IN ST. LANDRY PARISH

According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, “On June 4, 2024, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Elderly Affairs Division received a complaint for exploitation. The victim stated that her nephew, Gregory Red, was exploiting her and her home was being foreclosed.”

Upon further investigation by detectives, it was learned that in 2017, Gregory Red went to the victim’s home and told her to be a co-signer to get a loan to secure his home from foreclosure. Gregory Red was escorted by an unknown woman. The victim stated that she feared her nephew and signed the documents at her home.

According to the victim, there were no witnesses at the time the documents were signed; however, the loan documents showed a Notary Public and 2 witnesses were present at that time and the documents were signed by them.

In 2019, Gregory Red returned to the victim’s home with more documents for the victim to sign. He also told the victim that she would have to go to bankruptcy court with him due to signing for the loan he received. During the bankruptcy hearing, the victim learned that her home was used as collateral for a $250,000 loan and that she was the actual debtor. The victim stated that Gregory Red demanded for her to sign additional documents as he filed for Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. During the filing procedures for one of the bankruptcies, another family member noticed that the victim was filing for bankruptcy. Upon being questioned, the victim stated that she was not filing bankruptcy and denied having financial difficulties.

After hiring an attorney, the victim learned that she was also listed as president of two different companies. It was also discovered that a business bank account was opened at a local bank without her knowledge and she denied depositing or withdrawing from the account.

When questioned by detectives, the Notary Public stated that there were witnesses present at the time the documents were signed. The Notary Public claimed that she would not have done the job without witnesses being present.

When questioned by detectives, one of the witnesses denied being at the home with a second witness when any documents were signed by the victim, as well as denying the signature on the documents as being her own.

Information was confirmed by detectives that a mortgage was obtained against the victim’s home for $250,000.99, as well as credit cards with a total limit of $13,800. Also, a vehicle loan was obtained for $47,373.60. In addition, the victim was also listed as a guarantor on Gregory Red’s residence that was foreclosed on in 2024, leaving the victim responsible for an additional $230,000 loan.

Gregory Red left the victim in a total financial deficit of $541,173.60.

An arrest warrant was issued for Gregory Red on July 9, 2024, charging him with Exploitation of Person with Infirmities, Mortgage Fraud, Credit Card Fraud by Person Authorized to Provide Goods and Services, and Theft in Excess of $500,000.
